Gym glossary
The words trainers use, in plain English. If a term on FloorPass is missing here, email us and we will add it.
HIIT
High-intensity interval training. Short bursts of hard effort with brief rests in between. Great for conditioning in a short session.
Strength training
Lifting against resistance (barbells, dumbbells, machines, your own body) to get stronger over time.
Hypertrophy
Training aimed at building muscle size, usually moderate weights for 8 to 15 reps.
Mobility
Your ability to move joints through their full range with control. Mobility work reduces stiffness and helps you lift with better form.
Conditioning
Work that builds your engine: heart, lungs, and stamina. Rowing, sled pushes, bike intervals, and circuits all count.
Compound lift
A movement that uses several joints and muscle groups at once, like a squat, deadlift, press, or row.
Reps and sets
A rep is one complete movement. A set is a group of reps done back to back. "3 sets of 10" means 30 reps total with rests between sets.
Superset
Two exercises done back to back with no rest between them, then a rest before the next round.
Circuit
A sequence of several exercises done one after another with little rest. One trip through the list is one round.
AMRAP
As many rounds (or reps) as possible in a set time, for example 12 minutes.
EMOM
Every minute on the minute. You start a set at the top of each minute and rest for whatever time is left.
RPE
Rate of perceived exertion, a 1 to 10 scale for how hard a set felt. A trainer may ask you to work at "RPE 7" (hard, with three reps left in the tank).
Progressive overload
Gradually increasing weight, reps, or difficulty over weeks so your body keeps adapting. It is the reason a program works.
Deload
A planned lighter week that lets your body recover so you can push again afterward.
DOMS
Delayed onset muscle soreness, the stiffness that shows up a day or two after a hard session. Normal, and it fades as you train consistently.
Warm-up and cool-down
Easy movement before training to prepare your body, and after training to bring your heart rate down and start recovery.
Core
The muscles around your midsection and hips that stabilize you during every lift, not just your abs.
Functional training
Exercises that mirror everyday movement patterns: carrying, hinging, pushing, pulling, and getting up off the floor.
Race prep
Training built around a specific event, such as a 5K, a Spartan race, or Hyrox, with a plan that peaks on race day.
Return from injury
Careful, progressive training that rebuilds strength and confidence after an injury, ideally alongside your doctor or physical therapist.
Floor access
On FloorPass, your session price includes the right to train on the gym floor for that session. You do not need a membership at the gym.
All-in price
The one number you pay for a session. It already includes the trainer, the gym floor, and FloorPass. No add-ons at the door.
Roster
A trainer's own client list. If you are on a trainer's roster, you can book them directly from Sessions at your locked rate.
